President’s Pen - Natalie Griffin, President

Dear Teachers:

I hope that your teaching semester is off to a great start! Each new season brings an opportunity to reflect on our common purpose and vision. As stated on our website we dedicate ourselves to:

  • Promoting the development of musical potential and ability in our students
  • Maintaining high professional standards of our members
  • Maintaining exacting qualifications for membership in the organization
  • Promoting the stability of the music teaching profession

Whether you are new to teaching or one of our veteran members I encourage you to reflect on your vital role in the musical community and how much your work contributes to the lives of others. Equally importantly, I encourage you to consider self-care and what you need in order to sustain this wonderful life-long profession. Afterall, only the first bullet point is about our students. The other three are designed to help you, the teacher, maintain excellence!

With that in mind I look forward to seeing you at our first event on September 14th. Please feel free to reach out if you have ideas about how we can, as a branch, move forward and reach our shared vision.

Natalie Griffin
MTAC San Mateo Branch President

Dear Teachers,

I hope you had a restful summer and are ready for the coming year. For those who are new members, I am the website administrator for our branch website and I want to make sure that you are taking advantage of this powerful tool.

Just a reminder: there is a state website and our branch website The state site is where you will register for CM and most of the interaction you will have for CM is through the state site.

I urge you to bookmark our branch site and go there on a regular basis. Some of the most important sections include the Events page, our current and previous Newsletters, the Branch Recital page, and the Recital Hall Rental page where you can review procedures for reserving your recital hall times at the Foster City Wind Room.

Our branch website also has a profile for each of our teachers under “Find a Teacher”. Besides being a directory of our members, it also serves as a means for potential students to find you. There is a search feature on your profile including: your name and contact information, what instruments you teach, your studio location, student ages you teach, if you travel to student homes, and if so, your travel range. To find your profile, visit the “About Us” tab at the top menu bar, click on Member and Business Directory. Then, click on your name, and this will send you to your full profile. Please check your profile and let me know of any corrections or changes. If you have updates to your profile, or any questions for me, please email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Announcements - Elisabeth Fourtanier, Recording Secretary

Dear Teachers,

This year instead of posting announcements as they come, we will compile and send them in a monthly newsletter. As always, we welcome announcements useful to the membership such as competitions, local concerts, and job openings. We will also take posts on personal instruments for sale. Please keep your posts brief, with no photos. We cannot advertise for businesses or studios. You may send me your posts at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. which may be reviewed by the board before including them in the newsletter.

You will still continue to receive individual emails regarding CM, branch events, recital hall reservation notices, and branch recitals. But, in order to save your inbox from multiple emails, all other announcements will arrive in a monthly newsletter format.
